Choose a Capture Card for the Console, Display and Recording Computer
Separate passthrough, capture output and host requirements before selecting a device.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A capture card sits inside a longer signal path, so its largest display figure does not describe every recording function. The console or source, playing display, computer and software each have requirements. Draw that path before buying, and keep permitted recording rights separate from the hardware's technical ability.
Write the playing and recording targets
Record the source output, the display mode used while playing and the recording format required by the software. Passthrough and captured output can be different documented capabilities. Elgato's official HD60 X information identifies a real external capture product, but the selected model's exact support is the relevant comparison. Do not assume a title containing 4K means every capture, passthrough and operating-system combination works identically.
Check the computer and software
Read the manufacturer's host specifications, supported operating systems and connection requirements. Elgato's driver guidance distinguishes devices and setup conditions, so use the exact product rather than an older generic installation guide. Check whether the actual recording application is supported and whether software installation is permitted. A physically matching USB port may still lack the documented connection capability. Include hubs or adapters on the path rather than hiding them from the compatibility record.
Map audio and protected sources
List where game, microphone and other permitted audio are intended to come from. Read the capture device and source documentation for supported routes. Do not assume a headset connection automatically produces the recording mix you expect. Protected content and service restrictions must be respected; a capture device should not be recommended as a way to bypass them. Obtain appropriate consent and rights for recording other people or material.
Plan the physical setup and trial
Measure the device, HDMI and USB cable routes on the desk, preserving the manufacturer's ventilation and handling instructions. Check included cables and the active selected variant. Trial an allowed sample at the supported target before an essential recording, keeping your own result distinct from an independent benchmark. Skip the purchase when built-in approved recording already covers the actual task. If buying, retain the full connection map and model references so later source, display or software changes can be reviewed.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option or check | Reason to choose | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| External capture device | Documented source and host modes match the task | Passthrough and recording figures may differ. |
| Built-in recording | Already produces the permitted required output | Extra hardware may add no useful function. |
| Camera-oriented capture | A documented camera source is the actual need | Console-oriented features may be unnecessary. |
Your purchase checklist
- Separate playing and recording modes
- Check host requirements
- Map audio explicitly
- Respect source and recording permissions
- Trial a permitted sample through the full path
