Choose a Privacy Filter by the Screen Shape and Attachment
Measure the actual panel and check the mounting method before choosing a diagonal size.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A privacy filter must fit the intended screen and its attachment arrangement. A diagonal measurement alone does not establish matching width, height or border coverage. Start with the exact device and the place it is used, then compare filter formats. This guide does not certify information security or independently measure viewing angles.
Identify the screen geometry
Record the device model, display diagonal and aspect ratio, then find the usable width and height required by the filter maker's measuring method. Kensington's official selector distinguishes device types, screen sizes and ratios. Read its instructions carefully rather than comparing a measurement of the whole lid with a measurement of the visible panel. Screens with a similar diagonal can have different shapes, making a familiar size label an incomplete shopping filter.
Read the attachment requirements
Kensington's catalog separates several attachment formats, including magnetic and other mounting methods. Check the exact filter's supported device and installation instructions. A magnetic model intended for one laptop should not be assumed compatible with another simply because both have a metal lid. Keep cameras, sensors and the laptop's permitted closing arrangement in view. Do not add adhesive or force a lid shut to make an unsuitable filter appear to fit.
Describe the actual viewing task
Write whether the filter remains attached all day or is used only in a particular public or shared setting. Compare storage for a removable filter with the inconvenience of repeated installation. Read orientation and use limitations for the exact product. A filter narrows a view under stated conditions; it does not replace access controls, good handling or the responsibility to keep sensitive work out of inappropriate locations.
Compare the complete ownership routine
Read cleaning, removal and replacement-part instructions before purchase. Check any changes you need to make to normal display settings through the device and filter documentation rather than an untested brightness promise. Skip a filter when the actual risk is a screen placed in an unsuitable environment that should be relocated instead. If buying, retain the measured geometry, attachment reference and return terms. Recheck fit when the laptop or screen changes, even if the new model uses the same nominal diagonal.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option or check | Reason to choose | Reason to reconsider |
|---|---|---|
| Device-specific magnetic filter | Exact supported device and closure fit are confirmed | Similar lid materials do not establish compatibility. |
| Measured screen-format filter | Dimensions match the maker’s method | Diagonal alone can select the wrong shape. |
| Workspace relocation | The viewing environment is the main problem | A filter is not a complete security system. |
Your purchase checklist
- Record exact screen and ratio
- Use the maker’s measuring method
- Check camera and closure clearance
- Choose permanent or removable routine
- Read cleaning and attachment guidance
